The term for immunity gained by receiving antibodies from another source is passive immunity. This type of immunity occurs when an individual receives antibodies that were produced by another organism, rather than producing those antibodies through their own immune system.

An example of passive immunity is when a mother transfers antibodies to her baby during pregnancy through the placenta or through breast milk after birth. This provides the infant with immediate protection against certain infections. Passive immunity is usually temporary, lasting only until the borrowed antibodies naturally degrade in the body, which can take weeks to months.

In contrast, active immunity involves the body producing its own antibodies in response to exposure to a pathogen or through vaccination, resulting in long-term immunity. Natural immunity refers to immunity that occurs through natural biological processes, while artificial immunity typically involves immunizations or vaccinations that are specifically administered.
